Chevrolet debuted its new concept car the Chevy Aveo RS this year at the 2010 NAIAS (North American International Auto Show), in Detroit Michigan. The new Chevrolet Aveo RS has a European flair, and it’s appealing to young drivers that are buying small cars for their efficiency and character.

The Aveo RS could lead the small car segment as it brings together both interior and exterior design, and does so without sacrificing its utility. The cargo space is quite adequate and fits nicely with the vehicle in terms of aesthetics.

The sporty design of the new Aveo RS was well received at the Auto Show, especially the well designed front grill that has brushed aluminum and fog lights to accent the fenders and fascia.

The Chevy Aveo RS also looks aggressive without appearing obnoxious, the some cars do with spoilers that serve no engineering purpose and useless fender cladding like some of the alternative vehicles in this segment.

The Aveo RS shows that the design and functionality can come together and represent a very popular selling car for a younger generation of drivers. Everybody wins when it looks as good as it drives, so expect Chevy to move this into production soon, and begin promoting it online to a younger target audience.

The Aveo RS shares some mechanical similarities with the Chevrolet Cruze, which has a 130 horsepower 1.4L engine, and a six speed manual transmission.

Chevy realizes the demand for higher quality appearance and performance modifications so it answers with 19″ wheels and customized engine parts in brushed aluminum.

Those who wish to modify and enhance the looks of their Aveo RS will be pleased to see these upgrades made in the engine compartment, which will be of better quality than some of the aftermarket stuff.

The Aveo RS price has not been released, but given it’s audience and the price of the others in the segment it should be under $20,000.

Chevy Volt – Gets iPhone And OnStar Integrated

January 8th, 2010

The Chevy Volt has taken a step into the massive iPhone world of applications that seems to have an app for just about everything one could imagine.

The new app uses OnStar to interact with the vehicles battery system to display vehicle charge levels as well as other functionality that will be sure to add more cool factor to the car.

The much anticipated Volt is stepping up it’s game partially due to the demand that the market is expressing in terms of getting technology to make lives easier.

The vehicle is set to release later this year so by making an application available to iPhone users its going to build up the anticipation in ways to interact with the car. Vehicles that will incorporate these types of devices will continue to become appealing to the tech savvy crowd.

The more ways that cars begin to integrate mobile devices, the more popular they’ll be because it makes things easier on people who use the technology as part of their daily lives.

Its obvious that more clever tools and applications are going to continue to be developed by entrepreneurs hoping to simplify people’s lives. By integrating the best of these applications into vehicles like the way GM has done here, it shows a promising future that GM is loosening up when it comes to their onboard computer systems.

The next generation of vehicles will begin to adapt more and more to the lifestyles and driving styles of people by learning through these types of devices. It makes sense to consider ways to simplify and enhance the technology so everything becomes more intuitive and requires less user input to know what people need to do.

It would be interesting to see how well the new technology in syncing mobile devices that carry information about schedules, meetings and other data with the destinations people are driving to in order to make the most efficient use of time.

GM Invests In Plant To Build Chevrolet Volt

December 8th, 2009

DETROIT, Mich. – General Motors will invest $336 million in the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant to begin production of the Chevrolet Volt electric car, with extended-range capabilities, in 2010.

This brings GM’s combined Volt-related investments in Michigan to $700 million, covering eight facilities. Detroit-Hamtramck will be the final assembly location for the Volt, using tooling from Grand Blanc, lithium-ion batteries from GM’s Brownstown Township battery pack manufacturing facility, camshafts and connecting rods from Bay City, and stampings and the Volt’s 1.4L engine-generator from Flint.

“We expect the Detroit-Hamtramck plant will be the first facility in the U.S. owned by a major automaker to produce an electric car. It is the hub for the wheel that we began rolling in 2007 when the Volt debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit,” said Jon Lauckner, GM vice president of global product planning. “Since then, the field of challengers and partners has grown significantly. This competition will expedite the development of electric vehicle technology and infrastructure.”

The 2010 Chevy Colorado – 300 Horsepower V8

December 7th, 2009

The name sounds more like a truck for offroading given the terrain you’ll find in Colorado. So what’s with the 300 horsepower V8, it sounds like something you’d want in a street truck you’d want to build to 500 hp with a few bolt ons. It’s quite a substantial amount of power for the size of truck, and even further demonstrates that the manufacturers are carefully keeping track of what people do to enhance their vehicles.

If you might recall back in ‘91 through ‘93, GMC made the Syclone and Typhoon. These came with 285 hp from the factory, and were extremely fun to drive. They were stop light warriors with all wheel drive and 0-60 times in about five seconds made them addictingly fast with the help of a turbocharger. The Colorado, on the other hand, is more an offroad or great towing vehicle, but with 300 hp it just might be enough to tempt you to go higher.

In the time of the GMC Syclone and Typhoon, modifications were much more difficult to do and the turbo complicated things because boost can lead to detonation. Today, vehicles are much easier to bolt-on horsepower and not sacrifice the driveability or lead you to make decisions on improper or misguided modifications. I’ve seen late model Cobra’s come in to a shop in the morning get a new intake and pulley, then roll out with another 100 hp after reflashing the computer with a more aggressive tune.

The advantages in having a newer vehicle clearly save you a lot of hassle, and the parts available for them are usually readily available from the manufacturer. The typical upgrades may include intake system, exhaust and a tune. Checking out what other current owners have done is always a good idea to indicate the best bang for the buck.

Driving In Colorado Snow – How Will You Handle It?

November 19th, 2009

When winter kicks in and the road conditions become more of a challenge, now is the time to arm yourself with some good techniques when it comes to handling your car. There are many different situations where you may find yourself not being in total control of your car, but knowing how to react when they occur will increase your chances of preventing an accident or getting stuck.

If you hit the roads early in the morning before most people then you’ll need to be extra alert. The roads may only appear to be wet, but its a good idea to find out just how dangerous they are. When you are driving on roads that look as though they have ice on them, try using your brakes very gradually to see if your car reacts normally. If you press down on the break and begin to slow down, increase the pressure a bit to see if the decrease in speed is relative to the braking you are applying. You may notice that there is a point where your car does slide a bit if the brakes are heavily applied. That will give you a good idea on how much of a safe travel distance you should have between your car and any other cars around you.

Driving in snow can be challenging especially if you live in an area with mountains or significant hills. One thing you will want to keep in mind is that locking up the brakes is like taking your tires and replacing them with a set of skis. You want to avoid having to depress the brake pedal more than 50% if possible, which means you will want to avoid constant changes in speed. If the roads are really bad, its best if you can rarely use the brakes. With an automatic, putting it into D as opposed to OD will allow your car to benefit from engine braking. Its similar to driving a manual where downshifting is also a means to slow a vehicle and avoid using the brakes.

If you live in an area where the roads or even your driveway has a significant slope, you may not be able to go anywhere without chains or studded tires and 4WD. The deeper the snow, the more likely it is to prevent your tires from actually hitting the pavement. If the snow is wet you may find yourself hitting some spots where other cars have compacted the snow, this can be a very challenging drive. By understanding how to steer and make subtle changes in speed, your less likely to end up on the phone with a tow truck or friend to bail you out.
